【Story】
Elections Are the Best Festival Ever!... Or So We Thought
A rapper and a comedian, who only intended to be onlookers, end up documenting the election campaign on the day of the shooting of former Prime Minister Abe.
A road movie that asks: What is an election? What is democracy? What is journalism?
Rapper DarthReider, raised in London and deeply familiar with global political affairs, teams up with Petit Kashima, a comedian who reads and analyzes 14 newspapers every day. Together, they host the weekly YouTube show "Hirukaranandesu", where their sharp banter and insightful commentary have earned them a nationwide fan base known as "Hiru-mania."
As a spin-off of their show, the two launch an election coverage project, crashing the campaigns of over a dozen candidates during Japan’s 2021 Lower House and 2022 Upper House elections. They toss aside the traditional rules of documentary filmmaking–talking freely, asking blunt questions, and drawing out raw and honest responses from the candidates.
Their critical eye extends beyond politics. With Petit Kashima’s expertise as a newspaper-reading enthusiast, they also turn their focus to the state of journalism itself. One major confrontation takes place at the headquarters of Shikoku Shimbun, a regional newspaper in Kagawa Prefecture, where Petit Kashima delivers a sharp critique and sparks a battle.
“Elections are a festival!” they proclaim as they head to Osaka to cover the heated 2022 Upper House campaign, tragedy strikes: the assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. The film takes an unexpected turn. Campaign events are either canceled or proceed under heavy tension. Then, while filming one candidate, they are informed of Abe's death. Despite not knowing the truth of the incident, social media quickly filles with speculation and reckless commentary. Disturbed by the noise, the two set out on a journey–searching for what democracy truly means...
